The Unfortunate, and Unexpectedly Negative, Consequences of the Candida Diet

Candida, mold, fungi and yeast use glucose from carbs as their main source of energy. They also eat protein and fat. But fat and protein are about 60% less efficient than metabolizing carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are Candida's favorite fast food. In fact, one of the signs of Candida overgrowth is sugar and carb cravings. So, instinctively, it makes sense to eat a very low-carb or no-carb diet when fighting Candida.

This diet ties in with the massive popularity of keto and other low carb diets. Many health practitioners are recommending to not eat carbs. So it seems logical to stop eating carbs when you have Candida overgrowth. So that you can get rid of Candida by starving it to death.

Consequently, many practitioners and Candida "experts" recommend going on a no or low carb diet to fight Candida. This diet is often touted as the main thing you should do to fight Candida. (There are many ebooks focused on fighting Candida or yeast overgrowth using a low or no carb diet.)

Unfortunately, a Low or No Carbohydrate Diet Will NEVER - NOT EVER - Eliminate Candida.

Symptoms calm down while on the Candida diet. The Candida or mold in your body doesn't get as much to eat. (You don't either.) So they don't produce as much metabolic waste. And it is metabolic waste that causes most Candida symptoms. This is why the low or no carb diet reduces candida symptoms. Candida also doesn't flare up as much when on the diet.

But being on a low or no carb diet is not going to eliminate candida. The diet does not starve Candida to death. Ultimately, being on the diet becomes an exercise in futility. Symptoms may improve while on the diet. But at some point you go back to eating normally. And within a short period of time, your Candida overgrows again. And all your symptoms come back. Worse, being on the Candida diet has negative consequences for your overall health and wellbeing. But first…

Here's why you can never ever starve Candida to death.

  • Your liver produces glucose when you don't get carbohydrates in your diet. It does this by converting amino acids to glucose. All cells, especially brain cells, need and want glucose. When you are not eating carbs, your diet is not supplying your brain signals the liver to release glucose. It then tells your liver to produce more glucose to be stored in the liver till needed.

    Because of this creation and release of glucose by the liver, Candida will always have glucose to eat. Even if you eat no carbohydrates at all. They won't have as much to eat, but they won't starve. Your liver can produce about half the amount of glucose that you get when eating a normal diet with plenty of carbs. So there is no way a no or very low carb diet is going to starve candida. They will always have glucose to eat. The diet will slow down their growth. It will not kill them.

  • Candida and other mold or fungus eat proteins and fats too. Again, this is not as efficient as eating carbs is, but it will certainly prevent them from starving. Fundamentally, you can slow down Candida's growth by eating a no or low carb diet. You can never eliminate them with the diet. And as soon as you go off that diet, back it comes.

    Restricting yourself to a very low carb or no carb diet is no fun. You have been told it must be done when fighting Candida. To stop feeding them. Not realizing your body is producing glucose, and the other foods you are eating feed them too. They may not be consuming as much of their favorite food, but they still are eating.

The Candida diet causes chronically elevated levels of cortisol.

Here's why this happens…

Blood glucose levels become low when you are not eating carbs. Your brain notices this. It then tells your adrenal glands to release cortisol. This cortisol signals the liver to release glucose. This process occurs just once in a while when your diet includes plenty of carbs. Such as when you go too long between meals. Or when sleeping at night.

However, when you are not eating carbs, the brain must activate this process many more time. Throughout the day and night. As a result, cortisol is being released by your adrenals many times a day. This causes cortisol levels to become chronically elevated.

Chronically elevated cortisol causes 3 of the 4 negative consequences of being on a Candida diet.

  • Cortisol turns down the immune system.

    Releasing cortisol is part of the stress response. Part of human evolution. It works like this… Danger is approaching and you have to escape or fight. This causes stress. This stress response releases cortisol which tells the liver to release glucose. The glucose supplies quick energy to your muscles so that you can run faster or fight harder.

    To focus energy on escaping or fighting, the body turns down the immune system. It is not needed to run or fight. All energy must go towards survival, and not towards supporting your immune response.

    Cortisol always down-regulates the immune system. In fact, immuno-suppressant drugs like prednisone are forms of cortisol. (They are 4 to 5 times stronger than the cortisol your body makes.)

    The stress response release of cortisol is useful when danger is approaching. But it's definitely not what you want when dealing with Candida or your health in general. Your immune system is needed to fight infections like Candida. It is also needed to detoxify Candida toxins. You need a strong immune system. But the low carb diet will, if eaten long term, decrease immune system function overall.
  • Long term elevated cortisol levels increases inflammation throughout the body.

    And high inflammation has many negative effects in your body. Not eating carbs, or eating low carb, causes elevated cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol levels cause chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is not healthy. It leads to more aches and pains. To autoimmune responses, cardiovascular disease, inflamed heart, brain and more. Even cancer is an inflammatory disease. You need to avoid this.
  • Extreme weight loss can develop on a low or no carb diet.

    Cortisol also helps the body replenish the glucose released by the liver. It does this by stimulating the breakdown of muscles, bones and brain to get the amino acids needed to make glucose. The liver then makes glucose from these amino acids.

    Cortisol also causes your body to use up stored fat in a process called lipolysis. Unfortunately, not the harmful visceral fat found around internal organs. Visceral fat increases inflammation and estrogen levels. Instead, lipolysis burns up your peripheral and subcutaneous fat. This is fat that is actually good for you. It makes you look good, not gaunt.

    Candida eats protein and fat when they do not have as many carbs to eat. Your body is breaking down muscles to get the amino acids needed to make glucose. And is burning up fat to support your cells. It is no wonder that after a long time on the Candida diet, people can become emaciated and weak.
  • The Candida diet makes cellular metabolism less efficient.

    Research has shown that the most efficient source of energy for cells is glucose. (Go to for more information on this.) When your cells metabolize glucose using oxygen, a high 36 to 38 ATP's of energy is produced by every molecule of glucose. Burning glucose has another benefit. It creates very low ROS free radicals compared to fat metabolism. This causes less damage to cells.

    Research has shown that glucose oxidation is by far the best way for cells to produce energy. Metabolizing fat is not as efficient at producing energy. Fermenting glucose even less so. And they both cause more oxidative stress than metabolizing glucose does.

That low carb diet will reduce cellular energy production. Symptoms of Candida overgrowth include excess fatigue. Being on the Candida diet could well make this worse.

What to do? Feed Candida by eating carbs? Or suffer the negative effects of the Candida Diet?

On the one hand, eating carbohydrates does feed Candida what they optimally consume. Not eating carbs reduces the amount of Candida's favorite food. So a low carb diet slows down and reduces Candida overgrowth. But they still have food to eat. They will eat blood sugar produced and released by the liver. They will eat proteins and fats that are plentiful in a low carb diet.

The low carb diet does not actually starve Candida. It will not eliminate Candida.

Even if you could starve Candida to death, or use herbs to do so, your Candida would come back. This is because Candida, being a fungus, produces spores.

Candida spores are protected from herbs and other Candida killers. They don't eat so you can't starve them. Spores stay in your body, and bloom when the environment is right. Such as when you go off the Candida Diet. When they bloom, your Candida comes back. Just like that…

The best the Candida diet can do is to keep Candida reduced while you are on the diet. You are never going to eliminate Candida by being on the Candida diet.

Not eating carbs long term:

  • Reduces your immune system's ability to fight Candida and to detox Candida waste.
  • It increases inflammation in your body.
  • It accelerates muscle and fat wasting.

Two other factors contributing to a too high fat ratio.

  • Candida overgrowth. Candida eat glucose. They can eat so much glucose that the ratio of fat in the blood increases to over 30%. Even though your diet has adequate carbs to keep fat calories under 30%. But when Candida eat some of that glucose, then the amount of fat can increase to over 30%.
  • eing overweight. Your body will use some of your extra fat for energy production. So even if your diet is not more than 30% fat, your cells end up getting more than 30% fat.

A consequence of cells metabolizing fat too much of the time can be diabetes.

In fact, this is one of the main causes of diabetes. When cells are in the fat burning mode, they can't use as much of the glucose that is in the blood. So the blood ends up with too high levels of blood sugar as the glucose has no place to go. When this is chronic, diabetes can develop.

To deal with high blood sugar and diabetes, reduce the amount of fat in the diet. This will flip the cells to using glucose oxidation in the mitochondria, not fat. And your cells will then start using up the extra glucose in the blood. To make this happen, reduce the amount of fat down to about 15% of the diet, so as to force glucose metabolism to happen. A diet with 15% fat calories will ensure your fat levels stay less than 30%. Even if you are overweight or have candida overgrowth.

Tips about healthy foods to eat…

It helps sooth the intestinal wall and may absorb toxins too. Refined pastas can be better than whole grain pasta or breads as they also do not irritate the intestinal wall as much. Just be sure long as you are not allergic to them.

Raw veggies and salads can also be irritating to the intestinal walls. But at first, if you have overgrowth of bacteria or Candida in the guts, stick with refined grains or fast digesting foods. Like ripe fruit.


Keep fat consumption closer to 20% of the diet if you have Candida overgrowth. If you are overweight, or are diabetic, 15% is better.

Cook or bake with saturated fats as they are less damaged by heat. Coconut oil, palm kernel oil, lard and ghee are the best to use.

Olive oil and avocado oil have low levels of polyunsaturated fats. (Polyunsaturated oils are the oils most damaged by heat.) But these two oils are monounsaturated, and are still damaged by heat, though not as much. Use cold pressed olive or avocado oil that has not been heated - for your best health.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids - all seed and vegetable oils - are the most damaged by heat. Use cold pressed versions only, and DO NOT cook or bake with them. Just because an oil has a high smoke temperature does not make it safe. These heated oils clog up your cell walls with poor quality fat. This prevents nutrients, including glucose and oxygen, from entering cells.

Not only does too much fat contribute to diabetes and other metabolic diseases like cancer. Fried or baked polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils do the same. Avoid processed foods containing vegetable and seed oils that are not expeller pressed. Especially avoid cooked processed foods that have seed and vegetable oils in them.

It is not the carbs in chips, cookies, sauces, cakes and more that cause major health problems. It is vegetable or seed oils that have been fried or baked. If you've been eating these foods, stop.
